There's usually a lot of people in the IRC channels, and they tend to be
discussing very complicated things, but are willing to help on simpler
questions as well.  I've found that questions asked on IRC are best
accompanied with a example of your issue posted to lisppaste:
http://paste.lisp.org/new/lisp.  Be prepared to be told to google it, or
read dense documentation, doing those first is often best.

Be patient with people, especially yourself.  Learning to think in lisp
takes a lot of practice.  Sometimes there isn't a direct match for a
common solution from another language, there's a different concept for
how to solve that problem in lisp that seems very non-obvious for a
bit.  You'll have to back up a bit and think about the problem you're
trying to solve, instead of how to implement the solution you're used to.
