I tried the attached path this morning and it works perfectly! I have also added a comment to the bug for that purpose.
This is GARNOME 2.10.0.1 (gnome-applets-2.10.0).

Just checked it; seems they have created this application to not support 2.4 kernels initially; hoping it's fixed now in HEAD. I cannot give it a try now, unfortunately.
If you'd have time to try their patch and it helps, can you drop a line to garnome-list?
