Was cairo built with png support ? Should show up as:
and the following features:
PNG functions: yes
..after doing a 'make clean; make configure' in freedesktop/cairo
maybe you need something 'libpng-devel'-ish ? It specifically
looks for pkg-config files for libpng13, libpng12, and libpng10..
