How did you download those tarballs? What command in what directory did
you run?

FWIW, mono neither will be downloaded nor built -- if you follow the
instructions in the README.
Running 'make paranoid-install' in the desktop/ directory will build and
install the entire GNOME desktop, including the dependencies you'll
absolutely need. Mono is not part of the Desktop.
If you don't know which applications you won't *need*, then you probably
shouldn't mess with it.
Anyway, if you at least know which apps you don't *want*, try moving
that dir somewhere else. If the build fails, have a close look at the
reason -- if it is one of the app (dir) you moved before, move that dir
back and start the build again. It will pick up where it left off
before.
