For some users hal-0.5.8.1, including the git sources, simply does not work. The daemon crashes. Using hal-0.5.7.1 does not work with the garnome-2.17.2 sources since geektoys/gnome-mount depends on hal >=0.5.8.1. Hacking the Makefile for gnome-mount to accept hal-0.5.7.1 does not work since gnome-mount-0.5 uses library calls not in 0.5.7.1 and it crashes nautilus.
A workaround for me was to uninstall gnome-mount and then copy over the gnome-mount-0.4 sources from 2.16.1 and install that. For me, anyway, that appears to have gotten around some of the issues introduced in the new hal. Maybe I got it wrong, and if there is a more elegant solution, I'd love to know.
