OK, so you downloaded the GARNOME tarball as a regular user. However...

You are *building* as root... Not good.

Do *NOT* build as root! Please read the README, carefully.
You will not be able to use the build installed inside /root anyway,
without severely compromising your systems security.

I don't use Debian, but yes, it should be possible to install GARNOME
2.20.0 on Debian etch, I guess.
