A dumb answer perhaps: What if the graphics file changes. f.ex. I'm working in LyX where I import a .fig file. I go and change the .fig in xfig. I know that with .ps/.eps files the change shows up when I update the psview, but is not seen by lyx until I retstart lyx. That's ok by me (actually I can't see anything in lyx unless I reset the tmp directory to the same partition). The big win would be when one uses smiley.xpm (yuck) lots of times in a doc. It seems like you have to convert things a least once per lyx session. Garst (probably missing the obvious)
