It helps a lot on a slow link. When things get busy a large download can slow to a crawl. If the docs are separate you can come back later. Maybe it would be possible to check if gdb is installed. If not, there is little point in turning on debugging. But, I was mainly thinking of people with limited disk space. If they decide to try LyX and run out of disk space they are not likely to come back or even complain. For every complaint we got in 1.16 I suspect we lost several users. Garst
