Make distclean is pretty fragile. Also, aspell quickly detected that it could not run a c++ prog (in configure), but lyx thought it could and configure proceded with only a weird warning that went by to fast to really see, and did not make much sense anyway. Then it evolved that I had to recompile aspell with 3.2.1 or I would have conflicting libs somewhere. After that lyx-1.2.x compiled with 3.2.1 Rob probably has similar problems.
I can see why John pukes at the thought of fixing configure scripts. Garst
