It is a .fig file with an external (.ps) inset that I wanted to import to lyx. The .ps insert is a schematic that I wanted to further annotate. Importing the figure into lyx let me see the annotations but not the schematic in either the lyx view or the ViewPs. So I went back to xfig and from there exported the file as pdf, and imported that to lyx in a second inset. LyX view of the pdf was fine, but ViewPS only gave me the annotations again. Very weird. I went back to xfig and exported the figure as postscript, then in lyx changed the file name of the .pdf to .ps and updated postscript. Lo and behold, both figures were renderded properly.
