Hallo Jim, not these engines, but fairly sized 8 zyl 2 strokes on ferries i have seen cranked by compressed air. It took about 3 s to make 1or 2 turns with the move piston till the next piston was fast enough for a compressio/work stroke. The turbo was on before that and the engines normally started at the 1. stroke. Also remember a large Junkers sidecam (100 hp at 250 rpm and 2 2.5 m(?) flywheels on wood/almond shell gas. One vigorous stroke from the 15 bar bottle ( wonderful riveted vessel!) was enough to turn this 4 stroke engine and overcome the dc at low compression. It would normally start on the rest of gas from the day before and suck enough to get the gasifier up from the remaining embers. They normally compressed the air for the next start by making the engine work as a compressor after turning the fuel off and opening the indicator valve to the bottle. All gazzies were open core downdrafts ,by the way.
