Philippine Information Agency, the development communication arm of the Philippine government, member of the Presidential Communications Group Company demonstrates eco-friendly technology in drying palay, tobacco By: Maria Teresa B. Benas Friday 8th of November 2013 5 0 1 0 2 TAYUM, Abra, Nov. 8 (PIA) -- Bluflame Technology Inc., (BTI), a subsidiary of a US based company, conducted a demonstration on the use of the bluflame gasifier in drying palay at a multipurpose curing barn at Quilob, Tayum last November 6. BTI Chief Executive Officer Vic Banatao said their goal is to bring an efficient, renewable and low cost power source in the country using biomass gasification technology. The BTI gasifier he said uses the principle of gasification or pyrolysis as uses rice hulls as the fuel source. Gasification undergoes four overlapping process, each with fundamental thermal and chemical reactions. During drying, heat is added to the rice hull to remove water and decrease the moisture content. In the pyrolysis stage, heat without air is added to the rice hull to produce tar and charcoal. Combustion occurs when oxygen or air is added to the tarry gas and charcoal to produce water and carbon dioxide. Finally, during reduction, the carbon dioxide and water are added to the hot charcoal to produce hydrogen and carbon monoxide. Banatao explained the many benefits the BTI gasifier can give to the farmers. Unlike the typical method of drying palay along the road where losses could reach from five percent up to 10% due to some factors, the BTI gasifier guarantees zero percent loss. He stressed that it is very convenient in any type of weather because farmers can dry their harvest even during the rainy season or during typhoons It is an alternative source of energy for drying because it doesnt use firewood or coal but utilizes instead waste materials like rice hull, corncob, sawdust, and corn husk. Moreover, Banatao assured that the technology is eco-friendly because the rice hull when carbonized can be used as organic fertilizer for seed propagation. The said demonstration was witnessed by the local officials of Tayum led by Mayor Placido Eduarte, Jr.; National Tobacco Administration (NTA) Board of Director Rogelio Elveña, and the NTA staff of Abra Branch led by Ms. Esmeralda G. Valera; and the farmers in Sitio Quilob. Elveña remarked that BTI gasifier is not only made for drying palay but can also be used for tobacco thus a solution to the tobacco drying concerns in the province. He informed that NTA Administrator Edgardo D. Zaragoza has endorsed said technology because is low-cost and beneficial. Mayor Eduarte expressed his support to the BTI technology.
