Much has changed since we met in Amherst, MA, at USBI 2013. Now, more than 100 producers supply biochar for gardens, turf, tree and landscape maintenance, golf courses, orchards, vineyards, horticulture, field crops, forest and habitat restoration, storm water and remediation. More than 60 companies supply carbonizers, from backyard devices to full scale industrial systems. Thousands of peer reviewed research papers are published each year. Regulations are being enforced. Up to now research, development, and information exchange has been assisted by public or donor funding. Donor funding has come to an end. We have big challenges to test and develop products suited to market needs, to educate consumers and regulators, and to continue to find ways that biochars can help us grow more and better food, use less water, reduce waste, recycle scarce nutrients, improve the environment, use renewable energy, increase carbon storage, and grow sustainable businesses. Where do we go from here? Biochar 2016 is our opportunity to determine how we move forward. We need to develop more effective ways to use biochars, identify research needs to support your products and applications, and discuss how we should develop as an industry. We look forward to your ideas and experience.
