Pulse jet engines do make noise. A friend of ours fired a pulse jet with wood gas in the 1970s. When he shut the gasifier down he found that he was being observed by armed police who were responding to reports that someone was firing a machine gun in the woods.
Somewhere there is a Youtube video of a pulse jet powered go-cart running on wood gas.
