Greetings Jeff, Les, and list members.

Can I point something out here ?

Les I understand your concerns BUT, the gas content in a gasifier is only
what is currently available at the hearth / reduction throat area, and
volumetrically about 1/1000 of 1% of the overall tanks volume, IF a tank
failed, the gas creation reaction would instantly cease (because of the
feedstock being open to air), so yes, even though we think that the entire
tank is filled with woodgas, in actuality, it is not.

During design and R & D of many units I've built, I have yet had a rupture
of any sort, I've had tons of "Puff backs" (as Mike LaRosa calls them), but
never a catastrophic failure of a vessel in downdraft gasifier operation.

even a tin can will withstand most gasifier puffs, they are very fast
events, though noisy, they do NOT last long.

BUT I will ALSO say this..... EVERY unit I build has 2 forms of safety
valve, just in case..........

Even the best plans, can be influenced by Murphy and his Law, and I simply
do NOT what to go there, ever.....

Les,

What is safer - a tank that is strong but will go off with a bang (so to
speak) or a weak tank that would rupture easily? Assuming the safety
relief scheme fails.

Thanks,

Jeff
