I hope to have more profound thoughts after due reflection. Two quick thoughts
One is that the piece has lost the irony that all alums feel this way. Heck, we've watched generations of laments on this board alone. If there is a theme to this edition of change - such as the big boxes driving out the local businesses, that is not clear. The second was the authors. I very much enjoy Carl Hiassen and owe the author a read of Klinkenberg and McGuane. Time will tell if they are considered along Updike, Salinger, and Faulkner. If it is lost Florida I am looking for, I'd start with Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings. I suspect the other authors lament a lost era, and view the loss through a lens that is Florida. -Zeb On Aug 26, 2008, at 6:05 PM, Helen Huntley wrote: > I thought you would enjoy this piece about Gainesville.
