I think that the only reason Tebow ran "the Tebow plays" his freshman year was because leak could not be counted on to consistently fight for the last yard in crucial situations.
Newton was not as ready to play last year as tebow was the year before - Tebow showed that he could pass if the defense sold out to try and stop the run. I think the overuse of Tebow last year stemmed from three things - no real confidence in the RBs from the coaches, Tebow's belief that he could will himself to get the tough yards, and Tebow's relative inexperience as a QB with full rein of the offense - which led him to give up on his pass progressions earlier and tuck it and run. I think the first and third will be much improved this year, which in turn will allow Tebow to not rely so much on the second. I think that Brantley will be the next QB to take the reins of the offense while Newton will more than likely remain the "change of pace" QB - i.e. the one that gets the "Tebow plays" when Tebow is no longer around to run them himself. I remember an image where Newton just buries a DB at the goal line. Meyer kept saying that Leak / Tebow worked because it was such a difference ("a change up") But Meyer said that Tebow / Newton was not a change up and would not work. My primary concern is Tebow getting hurt. If Tebow gets hurt and is out for the rest of the year - we are not all done - but close to it. No telling what could happen to Tebow's NFL career. http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/collegesports/2004019268_grid17.html http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/news?slug=ms-dixon042708&prov=yhoo&type=lgns -------- Original Message -------- Subject: [gatortalk] Re: [gatornews] [SUN]: Brantley Battling Staph Infection In Throwing Arm From: "Gatorrrrrr (via wireless)" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Date: Wed, August 27, 2008 10:54 am To: <[email protected]> Oh I agree. Let Newton run the "Tebow plays" - the plays that Tebow ran when Leak was the starter. <<I dont think one will be a predominant starter over he other unless one reallllllly step up before then.>> It appears that neither one wants the backup role. -------- Original Message -------- Subject: [gatortalk] RE: [gatornews] [SUN]: Brantley Battling Staph Infection In Throwing Arm From: "Gatorrrrrr (via wireless)" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Date: Wed, August 27, 2008 10:15 am To: Gatortalk <[email protected]> 1 Tebow 2 Newton 3 Brantley I think Meyer & Co want Newton to step up to take some of the running load off of Tebow running the ball. After Tebow is gone.. 2 QB system... Brantley and newton. I dont think one will be a predominant starter over he other unless one reallllllly step up before then.
