Somehow I'm just not worried about Billy Donovan leaving us for another program. Where would he go? If Kentucky couldn't come up with enough cash to get him, who could?

I can understand a few weeks. I can even understand a few months. But, according to the our Jeremy Fowler's report in today's Sentinel <http://www.orlandosentinel.com/sports/orl-donovan1708sep17,0,2788156.st ory> , it's been more than a year and University of Florida basketball coach Billy Donovan still hasn't signed a contract extension that was announced in June 2007? First of all, it's hard to believe anything Donovan or his reps say about the contract controversy; we learned that two years ago with all the lying and denying about Donovan taking a job/not taking a job with the Orlando Magic. My guess -- and it's only a guess: Donovan is quite content to keep working at UF without a contract. He's still being paid the terms of the new deal ($3.5 million a year), but he isn't bound by it. And the fact is, there's absolutely nothing the Gators can do about it. Donovan is one of the premier coaches in the game and he's the reason Florida is one of the elite programs in college basketball. It's not like football. If Urban Meyer leaves, the Gators might be able to hire a comparable coach. If Billy Donovan leaves, there is no comparable coach the Gators could hire. UF athletic director Jeremy Foley puts on a happy face and says he's not concerned about Donovan's commitment to UF, but it's hard to believe he's OK with Billy D's contract status. After all, he's already watched Donovan leave once (albeit for only two days) for the NBA. Who's to say it won't happen again -- especially under the current arrangement? --~--~---------~--~----~------------~-------~--~----~ GATORS: ONE VOICE ON SATURDAY - NO VOICE ON SUNDAY! 1996 National Football Champions | 2006 National Basketball Champions 2006 National Football Champions | 2007 National Basketball Champions Three Heisman Trophy winners: Steve Spurrier (1966), Danny Wuerffel (1996), Tim Tebow (2007) - Visit our website at www.gatornet.us -~----------~----~----~----~------~----~------~--~---
