Subject: [gatortalk] How will we fare against the Piggies?

After last week and after the last 5 games I am not convinced that we can
win another game.

How's that for an opening statement. I don't really feel that way, but do
think we need to significantly revamp our play calling and philosophy in
order to win out. Meyer and Mullen have this high powered offense with the
best talent and yet they choose to run it like a little old lady from
Ontario driving slow in the left lane down US 41.

Yes the spread can be a ball control offense, but it can also be a high
scoring offense. Yes the risk factor is higher when we make it high
scoring, but the reward factor is higher too (like no 1 pt losses to an
unranked team at home).

This offense is supposed to pose a problem for the D in which they choose
which poison they want to take. They can either bring the safeties up in
order to provide containment on the option, which opens up the deep passing
plays or they can play a base defense and let us pick them apart running off
tackle.

Instead, what is happening is the D is bringing linebackers or safeties into
the gaps to absolutely negate our running game and to create mis-matches
when Tebow goes back to pass. I have been screaming at the TV to start
throwing the slants, but we don't seem to do it much. The TE pass is also a
good option and we have success with it, just not often enough. Even a
bubble screen would be nice, but we tend to run everyone off the line and
throw the ball horizontally thinking that our speed will win. Yes we are
fast but so is the other team and if they maintain containment, our speed
advantage is minized to a few yard gain.

Playcalling needs to open up. Stop runnning the option because Tebow holds
the ball too long. Call plays like we are down by 7 all the time. Just
please don't let the Piggies do to us what Johnny Reb just did...
