I did not know that! I always thought the group loved that gym teaching and
that naming the group after him was the ultimate tribute, not a "mocking"
one.

According to Wikipedia:

In the summer of 1964, teenage friends Ronnie
<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ronnie_Van_Zant> Van Zant (vocals), Allen
Collins, and Gary Rossington (guitar), formed the band "The Noble Five",
which then changed in 1965 to "My Backyard", when Larry Junstrom
<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Larry_Junstrom> (bass) and Bob Burns (drums)
joined in Jacksonville <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jacksonville> ,
Florida. Their early influences included British

later The Allman Brothers Band
<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Allman_Brothers_Band> .[citation needed

group won a local Battle of the Bands contest and the opening slot on
several Southeast shows for the California

Clock <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Strawberry_Alarm_Clock> .[citation

In 1970, roadie <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roadie> Billy
<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Billy_Powell> Powell became keyboardist
<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Keyboardist> for the band, and Van Zant
sought a new name. "One Percent" and "The Noble Five" were each considered
before the group settled on Leonard Skinnerd, a mocking tribute to a gym

Despite their high school acrimony, the band developed a more friendly
relationship with Skinner in later years, and invited him to introduce them
at a concert in the Jacksonville Memorial Coliseum

I'm thinking Leonard Skinner was at Forrest High School in Jax.
