I don't remember when the first webcam went up in Jax pointed at the stadium, but I suspect it was around 2000. Each year, on this day, I have entertained myself all day leading up to kickoff by watching a webcam of the tailgating going on around the stadium. Yeah, I know it borders on voyeurism, but it was the next best thing to being there.
Last year, the webcam had been upgraded to a user-controlled version complete with zoom and panning ability. I was in heaven! Although I had no tickets to get inside, I could hang out in the parking lot all day just like I did for so many years while living in Jax. No tailgate party in the WORLD can compare to the WLOCP. After breakfast this morning, I eagerly rushed to my computer expecting to be able to log onto the webcam only to be disappointed. Apparently, due to capacity issues, the software has been downgraded to just a simple image that is downloaded periodically with no zoom or pan capability. The picture is blurred and doesn't even show the stadium. It is showing some kind of carnival on the Sports Complex property, and the quality is reminiscent of the early days of webcam. So, I'm bored, feeling isolated, and missing Jax more than ever this morning. If anyone knows of another webcam other than the EarthCam, please let me know. I want to join the tailgating!
