First, this isn't about his contract.  This was about his school and the legacy he had built.  Was it his right to leave when he wanted to? Absolutely.  I have left jobs when I wanted (and sometimes when I didn't), but when it involved an employer that I had a personal bond with, they knew well in advance and had time to prepare.

I realize my circumstances as minimum wage worker at McDonalds is different than SOS, the principal remains the same.  He could have let Jeremy know what he was thinking so exploratory talks could have been made.  He could have developed a successor that would succeed him, he could have at least told his players in person.  All in all he didn't handle this very well, he was mad about dockett and whatever else and put SOS above all else.

Here are a few tidbits from his resignation:

Gators athletic director Jeremy Foley said Spurrier called him around 9:15 a.m. on Friday to tell him he was stepping down. For a moment, there was silence on the telephone until Spurrier asked, 'Jeremy, are you still there?' "

And the Spurrier era at Florida was officially over, in typical stunning fashion, after 12 years as coach. "Certainly there was surprise," Foley said. "I had no indication (it was coming). And there's a sadness. It's a new day. We've had a lot of fun. We had a lot of fun together."

And BTW, his contract allowed him the time period between the SECC and the day after our bowl game to resign.  The Orange Bowl was played on 1/2/02, he resigned on 1/4/02, so he was technically not in compliance with his contract either

He had the opportunity to have his legacy continue if he had planned his departure better and in fact left UF in quite a bind during recruiting season.

Didn't his contract have a brief window each year in which he could leave UF, and that was when he left?

IIRC, the timing of the window itself was chosen by UF to minimize the distraction on the team during a bowl game while leaving enough time for the successor to step in before signing day.

It's a little harsh to criticize a coach for living up to his contract.
