VOLLEYBALL: GATORS COACH’S DAUGHTER PICKS JACKETS

One of Georgia Tech’s newest volleyball recruits won’t have to
learn to loathe Georgia.
She’s the daughter of Florida football coach Urban Meyer.
“That’s been ingrained in me since the day I walked into
Gainesville,” said Nicki Meyer. “So I understand that rivalry.”
Meyer is a 5-foot-6 libero at Buchholz High School in Gainesville,
Fla. She signed with Tech Monday.
“She was looking for something close in the Southeast, but not an
SEC school, for obvious reasons,” said her high school and club
coach, Jeff Reavis.
Meyer won the Class 6A state championship with Buchholz as a junior
and drew interest from Georgia, Tennessee, South Carolina, Ohio and
Utah, where her father coached before going to Florida in 2005.
Meyer visited Tech in June with her parents and was won over. She
likes Atlanta, having visited for volleyball tournaments and also
Florida’s appearance in the SEC championship in 2006.
“I met the team up there and I just clicked with all of them so
fast,” she said. “It just felt perfect.”
The Gators coach may drop in to watch Nicki play. Reavis noted that
he took a plane after a game last year in order to make it to
Nicki’s state final match. Said Reavis, “He’s really turned
into a volleyball junkie.”
The Jackets received national letters of intent from three other
recruits, including Monique Mead, a right-side hitter from Landmark
Christian.

One thing to keep in mind is that Volleyball recruiting is not the
same as football or basketball. In football or basketball there are
literally thousands of 'experts' ranking and reviewing the players,
there is video on countless web sites - in short player visibility is
high. In the non-revenue sports, the players have to make themselves
known to the schools as well as relying on the schools to notice
them. Nikki played for one of the top teams in the state and also
played on open teams and was recruited by some good volleyball
schools including UCLA.
I thought there was an article over the summer that said she was
offered by UF, but had decided that she wanted to be away from home,
she chose GT do to it's proximity to home, far enough away to grow
up, but close enough to not get homesick. I have searched and can't
find anything on this, so I may have been wrong.
On another note, on the GT Volleyball site, they list 3 signees in
the early signing period, and Nikki isn't one of them, interesting:
2009 Georgia Tech SigneesName Pos. Ht. Hometown (High School/Club)
Susan Carlson OH 5-11 Pasadena, Calif. (Mayfield/SCVC)
Jordan Kissman S 5-10 Aurora, Colo. (Eaglecrest/Front Range)
Monique Mead RS/S 5-10 Fairburn, Ga. (Landmark Christian/A5)

Hmm... she'll always be a gator regardless of what school she
attends. Isn't
that what we've always said? There are a LOT of people right here on
GatorNet that are gators despite never having attended UF. Now, I'm
sure
tuition wouldn't be a problem for her, but for someone else to be
presented
with a choice of attending Ga Tech on a scholarship or paying your
way at
UF, it's a no-brainer. Take the scholarship.
I'm still curious as to why UF didn't offer. Even if she was of
marginal
talent, with her connections, you would think UF would offer anyway.

That's exactly right. I wasn't recruited to play football at
Florida. Did
I go to Georgia Tech? NO, I went to Florida and sacrificed my
eligibility
for the Gators!!!

What's more important - being a Gator or being a volley ball player?
In all kinds of weather - we all stick together.
Now she's helping the enemy - thats not right!
??? Because she didn't play on a UF team that didn't offer her????

Traitor. We should start calling her SOS junior. I guess there
already is
a SOS jr - so we'll call her SOS 2.
