Did anyone else watch this game? We should have, could have beat FSU.

Calathes' passing was typically slow, sloppy, 'hopeful' and intercepted too
many times. Calathes also goes 'mentally internal' too often and begins to
play 'one on one' ball (I know I sound like Keith Jackson, as in "What he
was thinking."), but I've been a fan, basketball official and coach too many
years not to notice. Calathes needs to take his great view of the playing
field and combine it with a team vision.

TALLAHASSEE - Earlier in the week, Florida coach Billy Donovan was
dumbfounded because he felt his team practiced harder than it played on game
days.

Florida State's Ryan Reid is fouled by Florida's Dan Werner in the second
half on Sunday in Tallahassee.

The Associated Press

On Sunday night, the Gators showed a measure of grit against state rival
Florida State. But turnovers down the stretch doomed Florida in a 57-55 loss
to the Seminoles at the Donald L Tucker Center.

Florida junior Dan Werner had a chance to win the game at the buzzer, but
his 22-foot 3-point attempt clanged off the buzzer as time expired. Florida
sophomore point guard Nick Calathes, who led the Gators with 16 points,
found Werner open on the right side after racing the ball down the court
from the in-bounds line in the closing seconds.

"It was whoever had the open look," Calathes said of the final shot. "I have
trust in Dan. I'll tell him to take that shot anytime."

Said Werner: "It felt good coming off my hands. I thought it was going in."

The miss ended a 4-for-18 shooting drought from 3-point range for Florida
(6-2). But what hurt the Gators more were turnovers. Florida committed 16
turnovers, compared to eight assists, and was frustrated most of the night
facing FSU's length on defense.

With 1:03 left and Florida down 52-51, Florida State center Solomon Alabi
stole a wrap-around pass attempt from Calathes. Florida State junior forward
Ryan Reid then followed on the other end with a turn-around 10-footer over
Werner with 38 seconds left, extending the Seminoles lead to 54-51 with 38
seconds left.

Florida State (8-1) has won three straight and four of its last five against
the Gators. Florida hasn't won in Tallahassee since 2002.

"We just wanted to try to get it done," said Reid, who had a team-high 13
points. "We were the first team to beat Florida in a sport this season, so
we were fired up about it. I think both teams played hard."

Noticeably absent down the stretch was senior guard Walter Hodge, who sat
the final two minutes. Hodge, who hit a big 3-pointer down the stretch in
Florida's win two weeks ago against Washington in Kansas City, was on the
bench in favor of freshman Ray Shipman. Shipman drove the baseline and hit a
layup with 26 seconds left to cut the Florida State led to 54-53, but
Florida State hit three of its final four free throws to close the game out.

"I really thought Ray Shipman and Erving Walker were playing well for us on
defense," Donovan said. "With Walter out there with Erving, it's tough to
have two little guys out there on the court at the same time."

Florida played its best defensive game of the season, holding the Seminoles
to 31.4 percent shooting from the floor. Calathes took an elbow from Alabi
while pressing in the first half. The sophomore chipped a tooth while
drawing an offensive foul on the play. That set the tone for a physical game
that had its share of ugly stretches.

Florida trailed 39-30 with 12:58 remaining following a Jordan DeMercy layup,
but responded with a 19-4 fueled by defense. But after Werner made two free
throws to put Florida up 49-43 with 6:05 left, the Gators couldn't hold the
lead down the stretch. Consecutive turnovers from Alex Tyus and Calathes
fueled a 6-0 FSU run, with the Seminoles tying the score at 49 on a pair of
Chris Singleton free throws.

Werner added 10 points and six rebounds for Florida, with Shipman scoring
six points off the bench. Calathes had six turnovers to go with six assists.

"I thought we had some careless turnovers that they took advantage of,"
Donovan said. "But we had a chance at the end of the game with a junior who
is a pretty good shooter."

FREE THROWS: Florida State fans didn't storm the court, but the crowd of
8,963 had some creative signs, including one that read "Tim Tebow can't save
you now." . Donovan said after the game that sophomore guard Adam Allen will
be out at least another three to five weeks following another MRI on his
knee this week. . Donovan acknowledged he's contemplating the possibility of
a medical redshirt. "I think it will be up to him, how he feels," Donovan
said. "Because now you are talking about another few weeks to get him ready
for the conference season."
