So far, I'm 3-3 in the bowls and that was picking all of the underdogs except
gators.

Picking this year's bowl games

I'm a little worried this year.
Usually, I have to track down Andrew Copeland of Sister Hazel to have our
yearly bowl contest. This year, Dr. Football received a breathless call from
Drew, who seemed a little too eager to want to do this again.
Could it be he's been reading how average Dr. Football has been with The Picks
this season?
Could it be that he's been studying spreadsheets and Web sites to get a grip on
the bowl teams?
Could it be he was bored one day on the tour bus?
Maybe it's all of the above.
Since he has been helping me out with this for several years, I thought I'd
give him a hand and give him a song that Sister Hazel can record, free of
charge.
"Making picks is my passion
It may not be in fashion
To pick the Semis or Dawgs.
But it could be worser
I just lost my cursor
Writing another of my blogs."
No, it makes no sense to me either. But it rhymes. I mean, have you ever heard
some of Sister Hazel's songs? "Why do you chew your pain?" What the heck does
that mean?
I've been chewing my pain all season, but it has been during the bowl season
where Dr. Football comes alive. OK, except three years ago when The Sun
outfitted half of Gainesville in "I Beat Dooley" T-shirts. But lately, I've
been pretty stout on my bowl picks.
After winning the last two straight from Copey I thought about telling him to
stick to his day job. Except that he and the band are usually working at night
and I'm pretty sure his day job is either playing golf or PlayStation.
It's our standard deal — the loser treats the winner to golf and lunch and
donates $100 to STOP! Children's Cancer. I'm still waiting for those receipts,
Drew.
Because it's bowl season, we're going to pick a dozen games rather than the
usual 10. Inflation, you know.
Vandy vs. Boston College: Am I the only one who thinks it's sad that Vandy
finally gets to a bowl game and it's being played about five miles from campus?
Nice trip. At least the 'Dores don't have to play in their run-down stadium.
BC, 21-10.
Drew's pick: Boston College.
FSU vs. Wisconsin: Bobby Bowden was asked this week whether he was worried
about his players enjoying a bowl trip in Florida a little too much. "We don't
want to put them in jail," Bowden said. "I mean that. We don't want to bring
them down here and lock them up." Naw, that's what the cops are for. Wisconsin,
27-21.
Drew's pick: FSU.
Cal vs. Miami: On the other end of the spectrum from Vandy, I give you Miami.
The Hurricanes get to spend a week in San Francisco after a 7-5 season. Not
fair. "This place seems different from Florida," said safety Anthony Riddick
upon arrival. What gave it away? Cal, 30-21.
Drew's pick: Cal.
LSU vs. Georgia Tech: Here's some bowl trivia for you — Georgia Tech has the
shortest trip from its campus to its bowl game at 2.04 miles. That's also
roughly the rushing yardage the Jackets recorded against Miami and Georgia to
close the regular season. For some crazy reason, though, LSU wins 30-28.
Drew's pick: Georgia Tech.
Iowa vs. South Carolina: Have we all thanked Iowa enough for beating Penn
State? Probably not. The ball coach is going with Stephen Garcia at
quarterback. I think. Iowa, 17-10.
Drew's pick: South Carolina.
Georgia vs. Michigan State: Let's see if the Bulldogs are last year's Michigan.
Disappointing, underachieving season, but pull it together for the bowl game.
Or maybe they'll be this year's Georgia. Something was missing there. Georgia,
27-21.
Drew's pick: Georgia.
Southern Cal vs. Penn State: Everybody is assuming the Trojans are going to
light up JoePa's boys. Well, Dr. Football has looked at this closely and has
decided, uh, everybody is right. USC, 35-3.
Drew's pick: Southern Cal.
Texas Tech vs. Ole Miss: Too many people are looking at this as an indicator of
Big 12 vs. SEC. Tech was 11-1. Ole Miss was 8-4. Puh-lease. Tech, 45-31.
Drew's pick: Texas Tech.
Kentucky vs. East Carolina: Mike Hartline returns as the starter for the
Wildcats with Randall Cobb injured. "I can't say that this is just another game
because it isn't," Hartline said. I know. It's the AutoZone Liberty Bowl. East
Carolina, 24-17.
Drew's pick: Kentucky.
Utah vs. Alabama: Oh man, the Utah fans are catching it because the school has
only sold 2,500 tickets. Let's see, pay a fortune to go see your team
manhandled and then cruise Bourbon Street? Isn't that the dream of everybody in
Utah? Alabama, 38-13.
Drew's pick: Alabama.
Texas vs. Ohio State: "Um, any chance a Texas win would create a split
championship, AP voters? Just wondering. Signed, Mack Brown." Texas, 42-24.
Drew's pick: Texas.
Florida vs. Oklahoma: Bob Stoops is taking this seriously. He's putting in
curfews for the week. Big Game Bob needs this one. So does Dr. Football. But
you have to wait until game week for my pick. That's just the way I roll.
Drew's pick: Florida.
