By Andy Johnston Gainesville SUN Correspondent Published: Sunday, May 3, 2009 at 11:24 p.m. Last Modified: Sunday, May 3, 2009 at 11:24 p.m. ATHENS, Ga. – Preston Tucker focused on the fastball he was looking for and swung. The result helped give Florida another remarkable comeback victory. Tucker’s three-run home run sparked a six-run ninth and the Gators rallied for a 10-8 win over Georgia on Sunday, extending their winning streak to eight games and giving them a two-game lead in the Southeastern Conference East. “It was a great weekend for us, no doubt, against a great team like Georgia on the road,” Florida coach Kevin O’Sullivan said. “You’ve got to give our kids credit. They battled. They never gave up. They showed some grit in a tough environment.” The 17th-ranked Gators (34-14, 16-8 SEC) trailed 7-4 heading into the ninth, but with Georgia closer Dean Weaver unavailable, they rallied. Mike Mooney, who singled to start the comeback, scored on a pass ball before Tucker’s home run off Cecil Tanner gave Florida an 8-7 lead. Pinch-hitter Jerico Weitzel added a two-run single for a 10-7 advantage. Georgia’s Lyle Allen homered off Billy Bullock in bottom of the ninth but it wasn’t enough to keep the sixth-ranked Bulldogs (33-15, 14-10) from their sixth consecutive loss. On Friday, Florida trailed 8-0 in the second inning before rallying to win 10-9 in 11 innings in a rain-suspended game that was completed Saturday. “Florida-Georgia. It doesn’t get any better than this,” said Bullock, who had a win and two saves in the series. “The intensity level all weekend (was high). We weren’t down when we gave up those runs. We knew we had a chance to come back. Friday night was a big boost to our offense when we were down eight in the second and came back. We knew the game wasn’t over until the last pitch was made.” Tucker, a freshman who leads the Gators in home runs (11) and RBIs (62), has “kind of got that knack” for timely hits, O’Sullivan said. Tucker has been the SEC Freshman of the Week three times and singled in the go-ahead run in a win over South Carolina on April 24. “We got a couple runners on base and everything happened,” Tucker said. “I knew (Tanner) was going to give me a fastball, and he had to come to me. He gave me a good pitch to hit, and I hit it.” O’Sullivan added: “He’s kind of got some moxie to him.” Georgia appeared to have the game wrapped up with a 7-3 lead heading into the eighth. But Matt den Dekker singled in a run to cut it to 7-4 and then robbed Georgia’s Rich Poythress of a three-run home run with a leaping grab over the fence in center to set up the ninth. It was the Gators’ 21st come-from-behind victory this season. “You can’t give up,” O’Sullivan said. “You never know what’s going to happen. It’s a funny game.” --~--~---------~--~----~------------~-------~--~----~ GATORS: ONE VOICE ON SATURDAY - NO VOICE ON SUNDAY! 1996 National Football Champions | 2006 National Basketball Champions 2006 National Football Champions | 2007 National Basketball Champions 2008 National Football Champions | Three Heisman Trophy winners: Steve Spurrier (1966), Danny Wuerffel (1996), Tim Tebow (2007) - Visit our website at www.gatornet.us -~----------~----~----~----~------~----~------~--~---
