Zack is one of the Rotary Club volunteers that helped put up our new roof through Rebuilding Together. I got to meet him and shake his hand. The guy is a monster, in fantastic shape. He was on Spurrier's National Championship team. He was also drafted in the AAFL team that didn't quite make it to prime time. -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]]on Behalf Of Shane Ford Sent: Tuesday, June 23, 2009 8:47 AM To: GatorNEWS Subject: [gatornews] [SUN]: Former Gator among UFL draftees Importance: Low
Former Gator among UFL draftees Contributed by Ray Fitzgerald – Gainesville SUN Posted: June 22, 2009 2:23:21 PM It seems that every few years, some tycoon comes up with the idea of starting a new professional football league. None really want to challenge the NFL, but rather compete for the extra dollars of fans rabid for football on days other than Sunday in the fall. Some, like the XFL, AFL or USFL have ups and downs and eventually fade away. Others, like the AAFL (which planned a team in Gainesville), never see the field before money problems close up shop. The latest offering, the United Football League, founded by Wall Street hotshot Bill Hambrecht, seems to be serious. They're starting small -- just four teams: Las Vegas, Orlando, San Francisco and New York. The teams will be playing in seven markets throughout their first season, slated to start in October. The league also boasts some notable names like owner Mark Cuban, the same guy that's rattled the foundations of the NBA with his ownership of the Dallas Mavericks. It also has four head coaches lined up, all with NFL experience: Jim Fassel, Dennis Green, Jim Haslett and Ted Cottrell. All the league was missing were players and a ball. At least one of those needs was filled last Thursday when the league held its first player draft. While the UFL has already protected a group of players that they're keeping under wraps, some of the players on the drafted list harken back to big-time college football. The only former Gator chosen was offensive tackle Zack Pillar, drafted by Orlando. Others headed to Orlando included FSU defensive end Eric Powell, Wisconsin quarterback Brooks Bollinger, Ohio State defensive back Mike Doss and Michigan running back Chris Perry. Las Vegas grabbed former NFLer Adam Archuleta and previous first-round NFL quarterback J.P. Lossman. New York picked up former Jacksonville Jaguars running back LaBrandon Toefield and San Francisco boasts former Auburn defensive end Marquies Gunn. Team names and schedule are slated to be announced later this summer. --~--~---------~--~----~------------~-------~--~----~ GATORS: ONE VOICE ON SATURDAY - NO VOICE ON SUNDAY! 1996 National Football Champions | 2006 National Basketball Champions 2006 National Football Champions | 2007 National Basketball Champions 2008 National Football Champions | Three Heisman Trophy winners: Steve Spurrier (1966), Danny Wuerffel (1996), Tim Tebow (2007) - Visit our website at www.gatornet.us -~----------~----~----~----~------~----~------~--~---
