Well, I'm stunned. Are they really going to say a basketball team was the
#1 Gator team?

I guess I'm ok with that, but it is surprising at least!

Record: 12-1

The stars: There are almost too many to count. Heisman-winning quarterback
Danny Wuerffel triggered one of the most explosive offenses in SEC history.
Working behind an experienced offensive line that included center Jeff
Mitchell and guard/tackle Donnie Young, Wuerffel and receivers Ike Hilliard,
Reidel Anthony and Jacquez Green lit up opposing secondaries every Saturday.
The Gators also were loaded in the backfield with tailbacks Fred Taylor and
Terry Jackson. The defense was led by a strong group of seniors that
included linebacker James Bates, cornerback Anthone Lott and safety Lawrence
Wright.

What they did: The Gators dominated the SEC like few teams have, outscoring
league opponents by an average score of 46.8-15.8, a 31-point average.
Playing against the nation's toughest schedule, UF's undefeated run ended
with an upset loss to Florida State in the regular-season finale. But a week
later the Gators responded with a win over Alabama in the SEC title game,
earning a rematch with the Seminoles in the Sugar Bowl for the national
title. UF turned the rematch into a rout - a 52-20 victory for UF's first
national football championship.

Big moment: A few hours before playing Alabama in Atlanta, Texas upset
undefeated Nebraska in the Big 12 title game, putting the Gators back in the
national title hunt.

Fun fact: In perhaps the greatest three-victory stretch in school history,
the Gators beat traditional SEC powers LSU, Auburn and Georgia by a combined
score of 154-30.

Quote: "We had some good athletes, but who knows if our athletes were any
better than those on the other top 10 teams in the country. But there is no
way anyone got along better than we did. We really cared for one another. We
played hard for each other and we fought for each other. It was an amazing
run. We were just special, special friends. I'm proud to have been a part of
it." - James Bates
