Last Modified: Friday, July 17, 2009 at 11:48 p.m.Florida junior offensive guard Mike Pouncey and senior linebacker Brandon Spikes have been named preseason All-Americans by Playboy, but for the second consecutive year, quarterback Tim Tebow was not.Following Tebow’s 2007 Heisman-Trophy-winning season, then-UF sports information director Zack Higbee said he didn’t nominate the Gator quarterback for the team because he believed it would go against Tebow’s religious beliefs. Playboy senior vice president and photo director Gary Cole, who selects the All Americans, told Florida Today he had been leaning toward selecting West Virginia’s Pat White anyway.This year Cole, on assignment in Italy, said through an email that choosing Oklahoma’s Sam Bradford, the 2008 Heisman winner, over Tebow and Texas’ Colt McCoy wasn’t easy.“Sometimes the picks are obvious, sometimes more difficult, as there can be several good players at one position,” Cole said. “That was the case this year again at quarterback where you have two returning Heisman winners and all three top vote getters returning. Flip a coin.“We think all three kids are great. I happen to think Bradford is a slightly better passer and coverage reader that the other two.“But they are all good.”He added that a lot of work went in to picking Pouncey, Spikes and the rest of the Playboy team.“We selected Mike and Brandon using basically the same criteria that we’ve always used,” Cole said. “We collect data, we look at film, we talk to teams that have played against Florida, we talk to pro scouts.”One perk Spikes and Pouncey won’t be getting is the trip to Phoenix for a photo shoot.“Due to financial restrictions and lack of sponsorship, we were forced to forego the weekend... the first time that has happened in 49 years,” Cole said. “We hope to be able to reinstate it next season.”Contact John Patton at 352-374-5074 or [email protected].
