Haiti earthquake
The Gator Nation is rallying to help survivors in Haiti
following last week's devastating earthquake. While students set a goal to
raise $50,000 — $1 for every student on campus — for relief efforts, a team of
faculty and staff from UF was gearing up to travel to Haiti to deliver food and
supplies and provide medical assistance.. In addition, a UF forensic expert is
already in Haiti helping with identification of earthquake victims, and Shands
HealthCare hospitals are prepared to accept patients from Haiti.

Dead Sea-dwelling microbes reveal roots of protein common
to all higher life forms
We have more in common with Dead Sea-dwelling microbes than
previously thought. UF researchers have found that one of the most common
proteins in complex life forms may have evolved from proteins found in microbes
that live in deadly salty environments.

From crickets to whales, animal calls have something in
common
Scientists who compare insect chirps with ape calls may
look like they are mixing aphids and orangutans, but researchers have found
common denominators in the calls of hundreds of species of insects, birds,
fish, frogs, lizards and mammals that can be predicted with simple mathematical
models.

Can you take a five minute shower? Campus pilot program
expands
UF's highly successful "Can You Take a Five Minute Shower?"
water conservation campaign is expanding in campus housing. Residents are being
asked to take shorter, cooler showers — and to turn off water while brushing
teeth and report leaking faucets — to support campus water and energy
conservation efforts.
