You'd know it if you had it...you're one of the lucky counties!! ----- Original Message ----- From: Gatornet Admin To: [email protected] Sent: Saturday, January 30, 2010 5:20 PM Subject: Re: [gatortalk] RE: [gatornews] [SUN]: See you later G8TR? [C rabbe]
Since I've never heard of a wheel tax, I guess Hamilton County doesn't have one. Depending on which county you live, you either pay high/low/or none at all. That's what runs up the tag fees, but that $25 I pay for my UF tag is well worth it!!!! [Crabbe] Sorry about all the extra stuff you pay for, Wanda, but it must just be Nashville. I live in the county and only pay the $59. [Crabbe] In addition to your normal tag fees, here in TN we pay a wheel tax which differs by county plus the $25 specialty tag fee for the UF tag. I pay over $100 for my tag and don't care that I pay that extra $25. I think a portion of that goes to UF because these tags are actually authorized by the state and not just someone's individual vanity tag. Anyway, that's how it originally was intended when we petitioned the legislature to get these tags authorized by the state. [Crabbe] Well, yeah... but you have to live in TN. ;-) I just paid $100.85 for my tag... and $71.85 for my son's. He doesn't get a UF tag until he gets accepted there... next spring, I hope. Price hike hurts sales of specialty plates, including UF's Erica Brough/Gainesville Sun Buy photo Pat Patterson receives a new Florida tag at the Tax and Tag Agency on 34th Street Branch in Gainesville, Wednesday, Jan. 27, 2010. The University of Florida still has the top-selling specialty plate in the state and saw overall sales increase in 2009. But those distinctions obscure a drop in sales during the last three months of the year, coinciding with a steep increase in license fees. Other specialty plates saw similar declines, causing consternation among groups such as the Gainesville-based Caribbean Conservation Corps. It distributes grants funded by the sea-turtle plate, which took the No. 2 spot in popularity even as its overall sales dropped from the previous year. "If we can't generate enough money, then the whole marine turtle protection program in the state is at risk," said David Godfrey, executive director of the conservation corps. Starting Sept 1., the fees for purchasing a plate for the first time rose about $125. Costs for renewals increased by as much as $25 depending on the vehicle's weight. Plate proponents suggest the increase caused drivers to decide the extra charges for specialty plates, ranging from $15 to $25 annually, were too much to bear. State Sen. Steve Oelrich, R-Cross Creek, said lawmakers faced a budget shortfall and raised fees rather than increase taxes. He's among lawmakers who have questioned the specialty plate program, suggesting that the state limit the number of kinds of plates because they make identification difficult for law enforcement. Currently the state has 114 different kinds of specialty plates. "It just becomes a real quandary in terms of identification," he said -- GATORS: ONE VOICE ON SATURDAY - NO VOICE ON SUNDAY! 1996 National Football Champions | 2006 National Basketball Champions 2006 National Football Champions | 2007 National Basketball Champions 2008 National Football Champions | Three Heisman Trophy winners: Steve Spurrier (1966), Danny Wuerffel (1996), Tim Tebow (2007) - Visit our website at www.gatornet.us -- GATORS: ONE VOICE ON SATURDAY - NO VOICE ON SUNDAY! 1996 National Football Champions | 2006 National Basketball Champions 2006 National Football Champions | 2007 National Basketball Champions 2008 National Football Champions | Three Heisman Trophy winners: Steve Spurrier (1966), Danny Wuerffel (1996), Tim Tebow (2007) - Visit our website at www.gatornet.us
