It wouldn't hurt to call the ticket office and ask them about your chances and whether a contribution of the size you have in mind would help. I agree with Oliver that if I were in your position, I'd contribute something to get ahead of the people who contribute nothing. However, gathering a little more intelligence will help you know how much to contribute or whether you shouldn't bother.
