Thanks, Jerry, but that wasn't me who asked about it. :-) Cee ----- Original Message ----- From: Jerry Belloit To: [email protected] Sent: Thursday, May 20, 2010 2:42 PM Subject: [gatortalk] FW: website for GatorNet
I am sharing this in regard to Cee’s email. If there is sufficient interest in reactivating the site, we can explore that. I have downloaded much of the content from the website before it went dormant. If we want to take up a collection to reactivate it, I will be willing to contribute to it. It doesn’t sound like much, but I created the web site in 2001, so I have ~$720 of my personal money in it. I never really expected it to pay for itself (it was a labor of love), but I DID get a check for $25.50 once, which went toward the last cookout. If you decide to keep it, let me know and I’ll transfer ownership to one of you. You may even want to check available domains first – maybe a cool one has been vacated in the last 5-6 years. I registered www.gatormail.com once when I was toying with the idea of running a Majordomo mail server, but just didn’t have time to pursue it, so I let it go. FWIW, a “dot com” domain is cheaper to renew than a “.us”, domain, but at the time, “.us” was the only one with “gatornet” available. What does it cost to maintain? I do wonder if your statistics are accurate about use. I ordered something from there within the last year. I also wonder if the website administration could be delegated should we want to keep it. We might also poll the general membership for their opinions and usage. My new version of Microsoft Office didn’t include FrontPage, so I have no way of making changes to it anyway without buying a standalone FP package. One or both of you might want to go to the web site (www.gatornet.us) and browse around and download anything you might want to archive. I’m thinking the first of May would be a good time to announce a new admin. What do you think? No, you don't have to be mobile. Due to the volume of email, I don't have gator stuff coming to my Blackberry. I only check that mail before I go to work and after I get home. You've pretty much seen what I do. Its not that time consuming and that's why I stayed around for another two years, but now that I have grandkids, and I'm very involved with both CMA and PGR, I just feel like its time to step away. Let me know what you decide. I guess as long as there's backup in place to handle things when I'm on vacation, etc. I don't mind pulling my weight for a while and letting you off of the hook. I know how you feel - I was president of a local youth soccer club here for seven years - after a while it's just time for the "buck to stop" somewhere else. One thing. I'm not a mobile internet guy - when I'm away from the computer I'm away from email. etc. If that would be an issue then you may want to consider another "candidate". GO GATORS! Well, it wasn’t a joke. I was actually ready a couple of years ago, and I asked Jerry about taking over, but he enjoys being the assistant and does not want to be the “main guy”. As you know, there really isn’t much to the job other than babysitting a few people, deleting porn spam and banning the spam posters, and periodically editing the server to give someone posting credentials. I would, of course, be available for “behind the scenes” assistance for as long as you need me, but you probably won’t need anything from me that Jerry can’t provide. He has been an awesome partner in this thing, and as far as I know, will continue to assist the next admin, as well. This is not to be public information, and not to be discussed on Gatortalk. Think about it and then get back to me. If you accept the position, we’ll have everything in place (admin credentials) before we make the announcement.
