I wish this would have had the sources of revenues. Unfortunately this was a March, pre-spill, estimate. If the reports on TV are correct about the loss of tourism, those revenues will have to be significantly down. If the spill swings around to the East coast as some have predicted, the impact could be past catastrophic. I don't know where you got your info about declining revenues in Florida. We are expecting an increase in the state revenue and the budget was increased accordingly; and, UF is getting some of it. I have recently read that U of F faces severe cutbacks next year. I would love to have you look into the budget situation. From Pennsylvania I don't have those local contacts to get the real story. I have to rely upon news accounts and common sense. I do know how much tourism contributes to the state budget and it is huge. The problem is that some of it is hidden in sales taxes and in gasoline taxes. The University is in dire financial shape due to relying upon Stimulus money. Given the negative impact on State tourism (and related State revenue), it is unlikely that the State legislature can increase its appropriation to Florida. In fact, if the tourism dollars are hurt as badly as I suspect, I would expect the appropriation to drop. I don't believe that the University of Florida has any real contingency fund left to draw from. To a small extent, the University can make up some of the loss through attrition and increased class size. They could also decrease their research releases for faculty and assign them a higher teaching load. They can also defer maintenance for a short period of time. My fear is that they have already taken some of these measures so there may be little else available other than retrenchment of their faculty complement and elimination of programs. Finally, I am fearful that the oil spill problem is unlikely to have a short term solution and the impact on tourism revenues will continue for several years. Even though it may be argued that the money comes from private donations and would therefore not be available for salaries or scholarships, I believe that these people would still donate to a more pressing cause.
