UF students Jake Gipson and Matthew Wercinski won the National Guard FLW College Fishing National <http://chalkboard.blogs.gainesville.com/2010/04/uf-students-win-fishing-nat ional-championship/> Championship in April. The victory meant prizes of $25,000 cash, a $25,000 boat certificate for UF's bass club and $50,000 for university scholarships. They also received a boat and truck decked in Gator colors that they can use until competing in a tournament in August. The UF team received a mention in a story in today <http://www.nytimes.com/2010/06/23/sports/23bass.html?sq=&st=cse&%2334;=&%23 34;university%20of%20florida=&scp=1&pagewanted=all> 's New York Times about the growth of collegiate bass-fishing clubs. There are about 220 college bass-fishing clubs throughout the U.S. and Canada, according to Collegebass.com <http://collegebass.com/> . The Times story looked at Bethel University in Tennessee, which officially recognized bass fishing as a sport and has given two students the first-ever athletic scholarships for fishing. The UF team's victory meant it qualified to fish in the Forrest Wood Cup, the biggest tournament in competitive bass fishing.
