by Nathan Crabbe <http://chalkboard.blogs.gainesville.com/author/crabbe/>
(Gainesville SUN)

A recruiter for a for-profit college was caught on tape saying he won't
repay $85,000 he borrowed to attend the University of Florida.

U.S. Government Accountability Office investigators are looking into
deceptive practices at for-profit colleges. They went undercover this summer
to check on the recruiting tactics of 15 private, for-profit colleges,
including several with a presence in Florida, the St. Petersburg Times
reported
<http://www.tampabay.com/news/education/college/deceptive-recruiting-is-wide
spread-at-for-profit-colleges-federal/1113281> .

A college recruiter, whom the Times identified as a Florida-based recruiter
for Kaplan, name-drops UF in a secretly recorded video. In a portion of the
video that can <http://www.gao.gov/products/GAO-10-948T> be seen here at
the 5:15 mark, he talks about money he took out to attend UF in explaining
why someone shouldn't be worried about repaying loans.

"You gotta look at it - I owe $85,000 to University of Florida. Will I pay
it back? Probably not. I look at life a little differently than most people.
I look at life as tomorrow is never promised," he said.

The video notes that students who default on their loans face fees, damage
their credit and have difficulty taking out future loans. In most cases,
bankruptcy law prohibits a student borrower from discharging such a loan.

The video was apparently shown on Bill O'Reilly's cable talk show, as
referenced by a comment on the previous post
<http://chalkboard.blogs.gainesville.com/2010/08/uf-and-faculty-union-reach-
agreement-on-raises/#comments> that doesn't get the story right.

UPDATE: One more UF connection that I forgot to add - the recruiter
reportedly also falsely claimed that Kaplan was accredited by the same
agency that accredits UF. The GAO report, which found that four colleges
encouraged fraudulent practices, can be found here
<http://pervegalit.files.wordpress.com/2010/08/gaomarketing.pdf> .

Are you saying that Bill O'Reilly actually said something that proved to be
inaccurate? What is this world coming to? Next thing you know, a half
Governor from Alaska who never had an original thought will be taken
seriously and people will actually listen to what she says. Naw, that could
never happen.

Eventually, the gov't will garnish his wages and deduct loan payments from
his Social Security retirement or disability check, to recoup their
investment in his education. You can't run from your student loan. So good
luck, buddy!

I have heard A LOT of UF graduates brag about doing incredibly stupid
things. Is this news worthy? No. Lets follow some people who bored hundreds
of thousands of dollars for a house they knew they couldn't afford. same
concept no?

The GnvSun UF salary and tuition article doesn't say O'Reilly got it wrong.
It says a Commenter (one of us) got it wrong.
Either way (I didn't watch O'Reilly) the point is someone borrowed, and
someone else loaned, $85,000 to get a UF degree, and the borrower is going
to try to not pay it back. GFL with that. I think you can't even get a US
passport if you are behind on guaranteed student loans.
