U.S. Government Accountability Office investigators are looking into deceptive practices at for-profit colleges. They went undercover this summer to check on the recruiting tactics of 15 private, for-profit colleges, including several with a presence in Florida, the St. Petersburg Times reported <http://www.tampabay.com/news/education/college/deceptive-recruiting-is-wide spread-at-for-profit-colleges-federal/1113281> . A college recruiter, whom the Times identified as a Florida-based recruiter for Kaplan, name-drops UF in a secretly recorded video. In a portion of the video that can <http://www.gao.gov/products/GAO-10-948T> be seen here at the 5:15 mark, he talks about money he took out to attend UF in explaining why someone shouldn't be worried about repaying loans. "You gotta look at it - I owe $85,000 to University of Florida. Will I pay it back? Probably not. I look at life a little differently than most people. I look at life as tomorrow is never promised," he said. The video notes that students who default on their loans face fees, damage their credit and have difficulty taking out future loans. In most cases, bankruptcy law prohibits a student borrower from discharging such a loan. The video was apparently shown on Bill O'Reilly's cable talk show, as referenced by a comment on the previous post <http://chalkboard.blogs.gainesville.com/2010/08/uf-and-faculty-union-reach- agreement-on-raises/#comments> that doesn't get the story right. UPDATE: One more UF connection that I forgot to add - the recruiter reportedly also falsely claimed that Kaplan was accredited by the same agency that accredits UF. It says a Commenter (one of us) got it wrong. Either way (I didn't watch O'Reilly) the point is someone borrowed, and someone else loaned, $85,000 to get a UF degree, and the borrower is going to try to not pay it back. GFL with that.
