Having taught at a Florida community college, I personally think that someone can get a superior education by getting into the Honors Program (which would be fairly easy to do if the student were of UF academic standards to begin with.) It is my experience that the students in the Honors Program get special classes and usually the best professors and have a little bit of "hand holding", which I could have used at UF. It is difficult to learn in a class of 600 people where the professors or instructors have a difficult time speaking English.
So, Jay, I would suggest your daughter get into the Honors Program at FAU; and the others that are going to UF, also. I wish that I had been smart enough to get into the Honors Program anywhere. Jay-I hope everything works out for your daughter at FAU. There is a lot to be said for going to a smaller school, especially in your first two years of college. I'm afraid she will come up a touch short, but FAU will be quite an experience for her as well. I think she will be more comfortable there as, except for high school, she attended a small private school the rest of the time. My niece is pretty much a lock and wants to go there, but my daughter has already decided to go to Flagler (she found out a couple months ago about her acceptance there and fell in love with the place on our last two vacation trips). I suppose there is still a 5% chance I can change her mind if she gets into UF, but considering Florida is twice the cost for us out of staters, I'll probably just be quietly proud of her instead : ) I still have two more kids that are hopefully UF material... just have to get my butt back to the sunshine state in the next few years so I can reap the benefits of in-state tuition and scholarships.
