LET THE GATOR GROWL: SEE THE GOO GOO DOLLS, HELP YOUR GATOR CLUB
A chart-climbing band with a number of Top Ten hits to its credit is
coming to Gator Growl this fall — and you can send your local Gator
Club® to No. 1 if you buy your tickets through it. The Goo Goo
Dolls, a one-time alternative rock band that rose to fame in the
1990s, will be the headline act for Gator Growl on Nov. 4. The band,
best known for songs such as "Name," "Slide," and "Iris," is
currently on the charts with a song from this summer's "Transformers
3" movie, "All That You Are." Bringing music back to Gator Growl is
just one of the changes organizers are implementing this year —
others include moving the stage to the east side of the stadium and
bringing back fireworks. But organizers said they also wanted to add
a competitive twist for alumni by creating a ticket-selling contest
for Gator Clubs®. The club in each of three categories — small,
medium and large — that sells the most tickets will receive a
Clubbie award on stage, preferred seating at Growl and promotional
items for their fall kickoff parties. And Gator Growl isn't done —
watch for a comedy act to be announced later this summer.

UF AND GAINESVILLE COME TOGETHER FOR A GIANT ART EXHIBIT
If you come to campus this summer and fall, be aware there's a new
Big Man on Campus - and he's whispering in the ear of a pretty lady.
"Whispering Close," a 20-foot-tall bronze sculpture of a well-heeled
couple dancing, is one of several bronze figures by internationally
renowned sculptor Seward Johnson that have been temporarily installed
on campus. The exhibit, titled "Crossing Paths," is a collaborative
effort between the Gainesville Community Redevelopment Agency and the
University of Florida, through the leadership of the College of Fine
Arts. "Whispering Close," which was inspired by a French
Impressionist painting by Pierre-Auguste Renoir, is the largest of
the sculptures and can be found on the Plaza of the Americas. Ten
life-size bronze figures have been placed on the north lawn of the J.
Wayne Reitz Union, while 14 additional figures can be found on campus
and throughout the city. All of the sculptures are on display
through Oct. 14.
