Maybe I'm missing something, but I don't see any punishment from the NCAA getting worse because they played ineligible players (e.g. scholarship reductions, etc). Obviously, if the players are ruled ineligible, they'll have to either forfeit or vacate any wins, but we've seen how much that hurts with the FSU academic scandal (that is, not at all). On the other hand, if they lose holding the players out, they still have to keep those losses.
