competition next season as punishment for a string of violations that
occurred under former coach Jim Tressel, The Columbus Dispatch reported.

The ruling means the Buckeyes will be ineligible to compete in the Big Ten
Championship Game or any bowl game after the 2012 regular season under new
coach Urban Meyer.

The NCAA Committee on Infractions also ruled Ohio State must forfeit nine
football scholarships over the next three years. Ohio State had already
self-imposed a reduction of five scholarships over that period after
reporting to the NCAA illegal payments to players by a booster.

The NCAA also added a third year of probation to the school's self-imposed
two-year probationary period. The penalties come after the NCAA charged Ohio
State with failing to monitor the football program - the second-most-serious
NCAA offense.

Athletic director Gene Smith was not expecting to receive a postseason ban,
The Dispatch reported.

Former coach Jim Tressel is set to receive a show-cause penalty, which
essentially prevents him from being hired by another college.

In order to hire a coach with a show-cause penalty still in effect against
him, a school would need to appear before the NCAA and possibly accept
penalties.

Tressel hid allegations that some of his players, including former star
quarterback

Terrelle Pryor, were trading memorabilia for cash and tattoos at a tattoo
parlor in violation of NCAA rules.

Ohio State vacated all of its wins from the 2010 season over the violations,
and surrendered $338,811 netted by the university for the team's appearance
in the Sugar Bowl. Tressel resigned in May.

Ohio State is set to play Jan. 2 in the Gator Bowl against Florida under
interim coach Luke Fickell. Meyer will take over after the game, but has
already begun recruiting.
