I more than sorta agree with him. Billy Donovan has done more than the equivalent of Steve Spurrier.
Basketball was never more than a second thought at UF before he came and won just two national championships, etc. Although football takes priority with me. (I'll probably never make a trip to Gainesville just to see a basketball game.) I'm doing my best to follow UF basketball. I will make an attempt to get tickets; like I do every year to see the Gators play at Memorial Gym here in Nashville this year. I'm also trying to get the strategies down for basketball plays. It still seems like Greek sometimes. And, learning the foul signals from the refs. Billy spoke to our Nashville Gator Club a couple of times when he was first hired as coach. He impressed me then as a good coach and a good person. Living in Nashville has taught me to hate the Toothless ones to the east. And, it has taught me to hate Kentucky! Just wait until basketball season indeed! Yes, I think Calipari and K have it easy. If K said, "Let's sacrifice a freshman to the basketball gods." The AD would immediately ask, "Just one?" Give Calipari a couple of more years, though. He's bound to get caught doing something sooner or later. Heh. that's something we have over KY. They still want Billy! They'd fire 'ole Cal tomorrow if Billy said he would go there. Certainly, it was not a good performance and capped off a bad week. It's funny how you never hear from Gator fans about hoops until something bad happens. That's just the way it is around here. Florida fans care about basketball, but they are not passionate about it. Forget that Billy Donovan has won two national championships at a school with only pockets of success before he arrived. Forget that the only two SEC schools who haven't had a losing conference record since 1998-99 are Kentucky and Florida. Forget everything when your team has a bad game. It's like the call I got from a fan the other day who asked, "What has Billy done lately?" You mean other than win the SEC and reach the Elite Eight last year? I've said it before and I'll say it again, there are a lot of Florida fans who don't deserve what Billy Donovan has given them." I sorta agree with Dooley on this. I personally love Donovan. Wish he would come visit the Atlanta Gator Club sometime. You know what though? I am willing to bet Donovan is AOK with it. High expectations with fairly low pressure at a school with top 5 resources (funding and facilities) at his disposal. Think Calipari, Coach K, etc etc have it that easy? The stunning news came from UF coach Will Muschamp, who announced that Verducci is no longer on the staff and has been replaced by Utah offensive tackles/tight ends coach Tim Davis. Davis, 53, has strong ties to the Florida coaching staff. He coached with Muschamp on the 2005 Miami Dolphins staff, served under running backs coach Brian White when White was the offensive coordinator at Wisconsin and was on the same Minnesota staff for two years with tight ends coach Derek Lewis. Davis was the assistant offensive line coach with the Dolphins under Nick Saban. Muschamp was the team's assistant head coach for defense. Gator defensive coordinator Dan Quinn also was on that Dolphins' staff. "Tim is a perfect fit for our program. He has a history of coaching in a pro-style offense and shares the same program philosophies," Muschamp said. "It will be a seamless transition for our players and staff. "He understands the values that we put on the line of scrimmage and he will help us get where we want to be at that position after Coach Verducci made a decision to pursue other interests. We wish Frank the best of luck and appreciate his efforts toward the Gator program." Under Verducci, the UF offensive line struggled this past season, especially creating openings in the running game. But he appeared solidly entrenched on the staff. He was still on the job as late as last Friday, when he offered a 2013 prospect a UF scholarship. Although Muschamp said Verducci left to pursue other interests, sources told The Sun on Monday that Verducci was looking for jobs in the NFL and as a result was let go by Muschamp. Davis was Utah's offensive line coach this past season. The previous two years, he was the offensive line coach and running game coordinator at Minnesota. Before that, he was the director of player personnel at Alabama in 2008. Davis worked under Saban for two seasons with the Dolphins (2005-06). Before that, he was the offensive line coach at Southern Cal for three seasons. He's also coached at Wisconsin (1997-01). "I'm excited to work with Coach Muschamp again and join the Florida football program," Davis said. "Like most assistant coaches, I've been on a number of coaching staffs and usually there is a transition period when you join a new staff. I don't look at this as joining a new staff, having worked with Coach Muschamp, Dan Quinn, Brian White and Derek Lewis in the past. "I understand the shared philosophies of the staff and look forward to being part of The Gator Nation." Contact Robbie Andreu at 352-374-5022 or [email protected].
