I worked my way through, too. Builds character. I know what it's like to live
without electricity for months on end--among other things. A lot of todays kids
haven't a clue what hardship really is. In retrospect, there was something
quite calming about sitting around by candle light playing a guitar, writing
long letters, or studying, that was so much more satisfying than watching
tv....If you can't tell, I have fond memories and wouldn't trade them, though I
never became a Dr. like my grandfather. No regrets.

Subject: [gatortalk] Admission Standards for UF

This may be a topic for THFGT, but I wonder sometimes if the admission
standards for Florida have gone too far. I have a BS, MBA, and PhD from
Florida. I am certain that I could not come close to being admitted under
today's standards. My high school QPA was under 3.0, but back then, the
university looked at the person and the what was behind the grades. I worked
full time from the time I was 16. While I went to a great high school and had
great teachers, I simply did not have time for homework, papers, or studying.
In my undergraduate career, I continued to work mostly full time so my
undergraduate grades were not great either. I believe my QPA upon graduation
was about 3.0 with majors in Chemistry, Psychology, and almost one in math. I
was admitted to the MBA program on probation mostly upon the strength of my
full time job as a grocery store manager. I still worked near full time until
I began the PhD program. I was fortunate to get a $4800 Graduate Assistant
position so I could quit work. I am very thankful for the educational
opportunity I received at UF. After graduation, I have had a successful career
in academics, business, and even in ministry. (I am still a workaholic with
two careers.)

Why wouldn't you want someone like me now at Florida?

Jerry
