Every decade or so, a foreign song from an unknown artist explodes onto the pop music scene, with the song seemingly everywhere.
In recent memory; "The Macarena" and "Who Let the Dogs Out" come to mind. For those with longer memories, think "Sukiyaki" or "Eres Tu." With a catchy beat, it often is irrelevant whether we have any idea what the lyrics mean. This year's massive out-of-the blue hit is "Gangnam Style" by Korean artist Psy. The video is a hoot, with not less than three of the dance moves based upon horse riding; hands crossed as if in a canter, hands open and up in a gallop, and twirling a lariat. The song is creeping into marching band repertoire, the UF band was caught on TV playing and dancing Gangnam Style both during the Kentucky game and also the LSU game. Look for hands out front at shoulder level, wrists crossed, and bouncing up and down as if riding a horse. This year, my daughter Olivia is one of the two drum majors for Naples High. Olivia, as near as I can recall, was the first birth announcement on Gatortalk, it has been a fast 18 years. Some of you all may remember her from our picnic a few years back. At a recent pep rally, the Naples High marching band also played Gangnam Style, with Olivia and her fellow drum major as the lead. It's pretty funny and will show you what to look for when UF plays Vandy this Saturday. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t9A3FNfAHAM It will also give you a chance to comment how her talents belong at UF next year and can't be wasted at FSU (apparently a real risk due to the strength of their music department). -Zeb -- GATORS: ONE VOICE ON SATURDAY - NO VOICE ON SUNDAY! 1996 National Football Champions | 2006 National Basketball Champions 2006 National Football Champions | 2007 National Basketball Champions 2008 National Football Champions | Three Heisman Trophy winners: Steve Spurrier (1966), Danny Wuerffel (1996), Tim Tebow (2007) - Visit our website at www.gatornet.us
