I think Muschamp's strong public reaction was to show the players that he'll stand up for them when necessary (just as he'll discipline them when they fail to meet his standards). I also suspect he doesn't appreciate the rumor mill anyway. I think it's a very savvy move by him, whether he's trying to send a message to his team OR the media.
