It's possible Murphy just doesn't practice well.  There are some guys who
rise to the pressure of the game (just as there are those who do the
reverse).  Supposedly Danny Wuerffel looked subpar in practice, thus why
Terry Dean was QB1 the year we had the famous "DOERING'S GOT A TOUCHDOWN!"
game in Kentucky.
