That's true, but he's still correct about Driskel. He has never lived up to
his potential/press clippings from high school.

He's not a pro style quarterback, he's a spread quarterback.

But, in the long run, I still think we should go toward a pro style offense.
That will bring in more pro style players who will be playing in the NFL
after college.

You're also correct, Rob, in that the offense is so boring. I fell asleep
in the fourth quarter during one game. To think about which one would make
me go back and think about the horrible season we've just gotten through.
So, let's just say one game was so boring I fell asleep.

Spread... up-tempo pro-style... I don't care as long as we actually have an
offense. I've been thinking about an article that was posted here recently
about football being entertainment, and it's true. Of course I want our team
to win, but I realize that what I want even more is for our team to be good.
We demonstrated last year that those two things do not always go together. A
lot of the pleasure I get from watching the sport is in watching the
incredible things these skilled athletes can do. A perfectly-timed downfield
catch is a thing of beauty, akin to watching a ballet or musical
performance. It's an expression of finely-honed skills that I have never
possessed.

In contrast, watching your players tackling their own teammates from behind,
or blocking each other, or being unable to block an inferior opponent for
even a second or two, or repeatedly running up the middle into a wall of
defenders for no gain, is simply not fun to watch, whether we win or lose. I
really would rather lose a game like Alabama just lost to Auburn, where both
teams played really well, than to win a game like we did against
Lousiana-Lafayette last year, with an embarrassing, bumbling offense that
got baled out by the special teams in a fluke. I know a lot of fans wouldn't
agree with me on that, but I suggest that if you seek out and achieve
genuine excellence for its own sake, then winning will take care of itself.
And when you do lose, you can still be proud of your team.

So I'm on board for any offense that is led by a coach who can take the
players we have and help them to meet their full potential. If our players
are best-suited to the spread, then do that. If they're best suited for a
pro-style offense, then do that. But, for heaven's sake, let's give our kids
a chance to develop and excel in this sport. And yeah, let's make it
entertaining in the process.

Fixing the Gators: Muschamp should hire Tebow, Fulmer and put Driskel in the

SPORTS COMMENTARY

5:29 p.m. EST, December 3, 2013

A little bird tells me what offense Will Muschamp will run next year to try
and save his job as the head coach of the
<http://www.orlandosentinel.com/topic/sports/college-sports/florida-gators-O
RSPT000172.topic> Florida Gators.

That little bird is called common sense.

And common sense says Muschamp has one year to flip the field and make UF a
championship-contending program once again. Muschamp and UF Athletic
Director Jeremy Foley make a combined $4 million annually and are paid
handsomely to fix UF's woebegone program, but I'm still willing to give them
some sound advice free of charge.

There is only way to quickly fix Florida's abysmal offense: Put starting
quarterback
<http://www.orlandosentinel.com/topic/sports/football/jeff-driskel-PESPT0087
76.topic> Jeff Driskel in the spread and let him do what made him a star at
Hagerty High School in Oviedo. And while they're at it, the Gators should at
least offer
<http://www.orlandosentinel.com/topic/sports/football/tim-tebow-PESPT008528.
topic> Tim Tebow the job of quarterback coach. Driskel was recruited by
<http://www.orlandosentinel.com/topic/sports/football/urban-meyer-PESPT00853
5.topic> Urban Meyer to become the next Tim Tebow. Why wouldn't Muschamp try
to hire the original Tim Tebow, perhaps the most decorated spread
quarterback ever, to mentor Driskel?

Another suggestion as a potential hire: How about former
<http://www.orlandosentinel.com/topic/sports/college-sports/tennessee-volunt
eers-ORSPT000000290.topic> Tennessee coach Phil Fulmer as the new offensive
line coach? Someone who knows Fulmer tells me he is "bored senseless" and
would love to get back into coaching in some capacity. Many Florida fans
remember Fulmer as the highly successful head coach at Tennessee, but even
before that he was recognized as one of the premier offensive line coaches
in
<http://www.orlandosentinel.com/topic/sports/college-sports/southeastern-con
ference-ORSPT00000246.topic> SEC history.

But, mainly, what Muschamp needs to do is get Driskel in the spread.
Muschamp admitted after the Gators were pounded 37-7 by Florida State to
close out a historically bad 4-8 season that, "We need to take a look at
ourselves schematically.''

Translation: The most important position on the team - quarterback - must be
comfortable in the scheme. In high school, Driskel was a dual-threat
running-passing machine. During his senior season, he threw for 1,819 yards
and 15 touchdowns and ran for 1,333 yards and 20 TDs.

For two years, the Gators, under former offensive coordinator Brent Pease,
have "misused Jeff," according to one member of his high school coaching
staff. "They tried to force him into being a drop-back quarterback when
that's not really his skill set. Jeff is the type of quarterback who you
need to turn loose and let him do what he does."

Ironically, Muschamp and Pease were always worried Driskel would get hurt if
he ran too much. Guess what? Driskel broke his ankle last season while
standing in the pocket.

Moreover, Florida's backup quarterback Tyler Murphy, another dual-threat
athlete, is also more suited to the spread. Which makes Florida's previous
offensive schemes under Muschamp even more baffling. Why would you run the
<http://www.orlandosentinel.com/topic/sports/football/nick-saban-PESPT001655
6.topic> Nick Saban offense when your talent was recruited to run the Urban
Meyer offense?

That's why the Gators need to go out and hire a spread guru to choreograph
the offense. How about newly fired Wyoming head coach Dave Christensen, who
ran the spread as the offensive coordinator at Missouri and turned
<http://www.orlandosentinel.com/topic/sports/football/chase-daniel-PESPT0013
488.topic> Chase Daniel - yes, Chase Daniel! - into an NFL quarterback. Or
how about Bob Stitt, the head coach of Division II Colorado School of Mines,
whose offensive concepts have been borrowed by the likes of Texas A&M, West
Virginia and Cincinnati? Sometimes, the best offensive coaches come from the
most unlikely places.

SPT00000230.topic> Auburn head coach Gus Malzahn spent more than a decade as
a high school coach in
<http://www.orlandosentinel.com/topic/sports/college-sports/arkansas-razorba
cks-ORSPT00000237.topic> Arkansas before he got his chance to move to
college.
0.topic> Chip Kelly spent a dozen years choreographing his high-powered,
fast-break attack in New Hampshire before he was hired at Oregon. Or how
about Clemson offensive coordinator Chad Morris, who was a high school coach
in Texas five years ago?

Honestly, I don't think it's out of the realm of possibility that Muschamp
could turn the Gators into SEC Championship contenders in one season (see
Auburn's and Missouri's record last year). I believe this was a horrendously
star-crossed, injury-plagued aberration of a season.

When you lose a dozen starters to season-ending injuries, including your top
two quarterbacks, it's going to decimate your team. If you don't think an
injury to a quarterback can make a difference as to whether a team is good
or bad, ask the Green Bay Packers, who are 0-4-1 since
<http://www.orlandosentinel.com/topic/sports/football/aaron-rodgers-PESPT000
08904.topic> Aaron Rodgers went down with a broken collarbone

It all starts with the quarterback.

If Will Muschamp puts Jeff Driskel in the spread offense, he will save his
job.

If he doesn't, he won't.

The little bird has spoken.
