I'm sure they are shooting their 100 a day. Some players, like Shaq, just let all the mental get in the way and don't trust their muscle memory. Shaq had some of the best free throw shooting coaches come in and work with him and he was still awful at it. If a player is not 100% focused on technique and blocking out all the distractions, they will falter. Billy can only do so much... can make them shoot 1000 a day, but anything he does or says doesn't matter and is lost once they are on that line and lost in their thoughts... Its very mental.
Pure shooters have an advantage and usually have an equally high FG percentage and three point percentage because they are fundamentally sound already. It translates well to the free throw line where they trust their technique and execution. Others over think all the things the coaches are saying and hear all the advice echo in their minds and all the tips and tricks from friends, family, etc in their heads. That's the worst thing they can do-- and it shows. ________________________________ From: mail.bobparks.com <[email protected]> To: "[email protected]" <[email protected]> Sent: Thursday, February 13, 2014 12:06 PM Subject: Re: [gatortalk] FW: [gatornews] GatorNews from the Miami Herald, courtesy of JunoGator It's obviously not a priority to work on with Billy. Free throws are mostly mental and muscle memory. Only thing that prepares you for it is shooting 100 a day, every day and even that doesn't account for the mental aspect of it. I used to ask my players what the easiest shot in basketball is. They would say a layup. I would counter with a free throw-- it just you, the ball, and the rim if you do it right. I then asked what the hardest shot is... the answer? A free throw because it is just you, the ball, the rim, your thoughts, your mental state, and 1000s of screaming fans. > > >While having a high free throw percentage is indicative of many hours of work, >a team's high FG percentage is a result of equally hard work as a team spent >working together and perfecting an offense.
