When we lived in Kingsport, Tn we always made it to the Kentucky and the Vanderbilt game, for some reason we never made it to the Tennessee game even though that was much closer than Nashville or Lexington.

I have stayed overnight in Valdosta and Jacksonville. It's an easy drive on
game day.
I try to go to the Tennessee game when it's up here. It's a day trip.
Tickets are relatively easy to get since the stadium holds just under 2
million. Vanderbilt is a home game for me. And, Kentucky is another day
trip. I always take bets there on how long it takes someone to walk and
say, "Just wait until basketball." They didn't do that last time Shane and
I went up. Billy has respect in Lexington, whether or not the Cats fans
want to admit it.

I did that a few years ago, from Virginia, on my 50th birthday (happened to
be on a game day). It was nice, because I hadn't been back to Gainesville in
a couple of decades, but between flights, hotel, rental car, etc., it was
way too expensive to do very often.

What I am considering instead, is going sometime when they play away at
either Tennessee or South Carolina. Both are reasonable car trips and it
shouldn't be too hard to get a ticket, especially at UT.

(That's why I was hoping VaTech was going to join the SEC a few years ago
when all those expansion rumors were flying. That would be a day trip.)

The expense of the tickets is only part of the problem.

Simply put, there are not enough hotels in Gainesville. So, on football
weekends, they double their prices and demand a 2 night minimum.
$250 for a room that you only need for one night and would be $60 on most
nights is difficult to accept.
If I were coming from far out of town, I would make an entire weekend out
of the event once every few years. Enjoy the nostalgia, tour the campus, see
the butterfly and natural history museums. Find a nice restaurant and
splurge.
To think that I could do that 6 to 7 times a year, every year, is
unrealistic.

I kept my two football and four basketball season tickets for several

a while I just could not justify the expense.

I do think that if I lived in Gainesville or much closer I would
find a way to get to a couple of games, but having to drive so many
hours each way with all the associated expenses just puts it out of
the picture for me. I really do appreciate that HDTV is around as
it's pretty much my gameday experience of choice.
Interesting, but not surprising. Not only do older people have more
money, they also have a long tradition of going to games going back
before the age of HDTV.
