I beg to differ. I can’t wait for the SEC Network to start. I was looking at
the first week’s schedule last night. The best of Florida includes 4 great
games from the past.

Also, the SEC every Saturday instead of the ESPN love fest for the Big 10 will
be fabulous.

The Back Nine comes at you after a week away and a wonderful trip to the
Emerald Coast where Gator fans are like a lot of you — they have no idea what
to expect this season.

10. The countdown is winding to its conclusion. Not for the start of college
football season, but for the debut of the SEC Network on Thursday. I may lose
my SEC card for saying this, but color me less than enthused. Oh, I'm excited
about the games that will be shown, especially when it comes to basketball.
Let's face it, the football games you want to see are going to be on somewhere
whether the Network is on or not. And to be honest, talking season (or at some
schools apology season) seems to be really dragging this year. Maybe it's
because SEC Media Days feels like it was six months ago. I have no doubt Tim
Tebow will be fun to watch when he is on and it will be interesting to see if
the Network's pregame show cuts into the ratings of GameDay. But it's difficult
to believe I'm going to learn a lot about the SEC when it's clearly going to be
a promotional tool rather than a journalistic effort covering the league. In
any case, there is no way the buildup could possibly justify the entertainment
value.

11. Tebow said he's still throwing four times a day. I think it's just out of
habit. We all know he's not going to get another shot at the NFL. The league
was way more interesting with him in it, but it's over. The irony to me is that
he has now joined the network that is probably the most responsible for
creating the circus that keeps NFL teams from giving him another chance. The
bottom line is that Timmy can really be good at this new job and it will lead
to something bigger if he focuses on TV. He could be the next Cris
Collinsworth.

12. So here was the scene at my house Sunday evening. Steaks are grilling (it's
raining but I persevered) and I'm in the Dooley Dome watching the golf and my
wife and daughter are inside watching a movie and there are four guys tied for
the lead and I do a little dance and they look at me like I'm crazy. After what
was a pretty boring season for the majors, those of us who love golf were
rewarded big time Sunday. We had to be patient, but what a show. And it wasn't
just me because the ratings were up 36 percent from last year. The final hole
was almost comical, especially when Rory McIlroy hit his drive within feet of
the water, but it was so dark he never saw it come down. And it was so weird to
have all four golfers around the green at the same time. I just loved Sunday.
Now what do I watch until Aug. 28?

13. If I'm Tom Watson, I don't leave it up to Tiger Woods. I call Tiger and
say, “Hey, Tiger, get yourself healthy. Don't play any golf until you're 100
percent. Come back next season ready to go. Because I'm not picking you for the
Ryder Cup. Your body has broken down on you and you need time off. And when you
stand over a putt, I used to think there was no way you would miss, the way I
do with McIlroy now. But when you stand over a putt today, I don't think you're
going to make it. And that's the last thing I need on my Ryder Cup team. Thanks
for trying. But we're going in another direction. Now, go lay down.” But that's
me.

14. I'm wondering where the outrage is that LSU has let Jalen Mills back on its
football team. The national uproar over Ray Rice's two-game suspension after he
allegedly knocked his fiancee out was certainly warranted. Mills allegedly hit
a woman and knocked her unconscious in May. The charge was reduced to a
misdemeanor and he was allowed back on the team. Les Miles again used the old
“his teammates voted him back” reasoning. Most college football players would
vote Attila the Hun back on the team if he could cover the tight end. But is it
only because the NFL is such a bigger deal than college football that nobody
seems to care that Mills was welcomed back? Or is it this — there wasn't a
video of him dragging the woman out of an elevator after he hit her? Allegedly.

15. There isn't much doubt athletic directors are going to have to rethink the
way they budget with the Ed O'Bannon ruling coming down last week, even if it
could be years before the appeals are exhausted. I always thought it was
ridiculous that there could be a No. 15 on the Florida team on the NCAA College
Football Game who ran over people and threw left-handed and Tebow never saw a
cent of that money. The athletes were the winners here although we have no idea
who the first players to collect will be and I don't think we have any idea
where or when this new revolution will end. I wonder if this is a possibility —
that the makers of the games decide just to use generic players the way some do
and make the ruling moot. Unlikely, but they do have to put a cap on the amount
players can receive. Otherwise, you get the boosters involved.

16. It was a big day Saturday out at the Gainesville Golf and Country Club as
they opened the course following rebuilding of their greens. The course had
used temporary greens most of the summer while they put in new grass on the
regular greens. I can tell you that one of the thrills in life for any golfer
is playing on brand new greens. They really grabbed chip shots and were as
smooth as a baby's behind. Next up — the University of Florida course reopens
in a couple of weeks after redoing their greens. It will be nice to be back to
normal around here.

17. The Tweet of the Week comes from ESPN radio personality Ryen Russillo —
“Complaining about golf w/o Tiger w/ what Rory is doing is like watching Kobe
go for 81 and saying 'I don't watch after MJ retired.' “ My sentiments exactly.
Now we have eight months to wait for the next major.

18. So, my neighbor and friend Mike Chasteen and his band The Dixie Desperados
will be playing at the High Dive on Saturday night and they have invited me to
play guitar on one song — it's my favorite “Sweet Summerhaven” — with them on
stage. It's a bucket list item for me, but I have to admit I am so afraid of
messing up I have a sick feeling in my stomach. Anyway, come check us out. And
download this beauties — “It's A Longer Road To California Than I Thought” by
The Wind and The Wave, “In My Teeth” by The Rosebuds and for an old one that I
heard for the first time in at least 15 years on Monday “Ah! Leah!” by Donnie
Iris.
