This is the absolute best article you’ve sent to Gatortalk in a while, Shane.

I want you to keep them coming like this one this season. Add lots of “Gators
Look Good in Rout of Alabama” articles too.

Florida coach Will Muschamp throws his hands in the air as punter Kyle Christy
(4) gets around defensive back Marcus Maye (20) in a drill during an open
practice at Donald R. Dizney Stadium on the UF campus on Aug. 11.

Florida’s injury report for Saturday’s opener looks nothing like any of those
pre-game lists from last season.

The Gators very likely will be 100-percent healthy when they face Idaho in The
Swamp.

Safety/nickel Marcus Maye (hamstring) is the only player on the injury list,
but UF coach Will Muschamp said Wednesday there’s a good chance he’ll be ready
to play by game time.

“We’re pretty healthy,” Muschamp said on the SEC coaches’ teleconference.
“Marcus Maye is day-to-day, but I think he’ll be able to probably get ready to
go by Saturday night.”

The Gators, of course, were decimated by injuries and illness last season, and
the trend actually started early in training camp, with three of UF’s best
players — quarterback Jeff Driskel (appendectomy), tailback Matt Jones (viral
infection) and guard Jon Halapio (torn pectoral muscle) — being sidelined for a
considerable period of time.

It’s been a different story this August. The Gators had no serious injuries in
camp and will open the season in great overall health.

“Much different from where we were a year ago,” Muschamp said.

More on Treon

Muschamp was asked again Wednesday about the decision to go with true freshman
Treon Harris as the No. 2 quarterback over fellow freshman Will Grier and
sophomore Skyler Mornhinweg. Muschamp said Harris brings just a little more to
the table at this time.

“Treon’s command with what we’re doing, very similar to Jeff as far as a guy
that can hurt you with his legs, but is a pocket passer as well,” Muschamp
said. “He’s a winner. He won two state championships his junior and senior year
there at Booker T. (Washington) at the highest level in the state of Florida.

“Again, there’s not a whole lot of separation, and we went with him this week.
We’re going to see how that continues to go. Will is continuing to rep with our
offense as we continue to practice and prepare for our first ballgame.”

Gators are tight

Going through a difficult 4-8 season together last year seems to have bonded
the Gators.

“I’ve never been through anything like that last year as far as the things we
had to travel through and the adversity we faced,” Muschamp said. “But I know
this team has gelled and come together in the right way.

“We have a very good, strong work ethic. This is a very close-knit group that’s
been fun to be around. A lot of fun on the practice field, in the meeting
rooms, enjoying the breaks and the different things we did during training
camp. It’s been a very fun team to be around.”

Brown on guard

Center Max Garcia said it’s comforting playing beside 6-foot-8, 360-pound guard
Trenton Brown.

“Trent makes me look so small when I’m standing next to him. But I like having
him there,” Garcia said. “No one’s going to get through him. No one’s going to
bull rush Trenton Brown. That’s just not happening.

“And when he puts his hand on someone, that guy’s getting moved against his
will. He doesn’t want to get moved, but he’s going to get moved. So having him
there, he’s a force. Just really excited to play next to him.”

Taylor ready to rock — and run

Muschamp said sophomore tailback Kelvin Taylor is a much more complete player
than he was a year ago, when he led the Gators in rushing as a true freshman.

“I think he’s much improved,” Muschamp said. “It starts with pass protection.
That was an issue, and that’s normally something young backs struggle (with).
Kelvin is a great young man.

“He worked extremely hard. He’s got natural running ability, natural running
skill and he sees things very well. But he’s improved his hands out of the
backfield, catches the ball much better than he did a year ago. Protection, he
has just been a marked improvement of where we were a year ago, stronger and
tougher.”

Muschamp and the ‘D’

If you listen to the national football analysts when it comes to Florida, the
consensus seems to be that Muschamp’s defense is always going to be strong.
That makes sense when you look at his track record. He’s had success wherever
he’s been.

But Muschamp said the most impactful common denominator isn’t him.

“We’ve been very fortunate in everywhere I’ve been that we’ve had some very
talented players. That’s where it all starts,” he said. “When you’ve got good
players, you’ve got a chance to be a pretty good coach. I think we’ve recruited
well here, we’ve developed our players well here and I’m excited about this
group we got going.

“We have a good mix of experience and talent, some some guys that certainly
will make us look like good coaches at least. And everywhere I’ve been, Texas,
at LSU, at the Miami Dolphins, we’ve been very, very fortunate to have been
blessed with some very good defensive football players.”
